How To Tone Your Hair At Home

If you have highlights that have turned brassy or your hair just looks dull and faded, you are in the right place. I want to discuss all the options available to you for toning your hair at home in between salon visits.

Where To Buy Hair Toner & Where NOT To Buy It

Where you buy it is just as important as what you buy. I personally wouldn’t trust any toning products off Amazon because you just never know if it has been tampered with or if you are even getting the right product you are buying. I am all for buying other hair related products from Amazon, because its just so convenient, but messing with your haircolor is not worth it. You would ruin your investment you made on your highlights or balayage or end up using something that is really tricky to remove resulting in an expensive color correction appointment.

I recommend only buying toning products directly from a salon professional or a salon professional company directly. This does not include Sally’s Beauty or Ulta. Stop into a nearby salon in your area or order directly from the companies website.

What Toners To Buy For Home Use

As I already mentioned, toning your hair at home should be something to do between salon visits, so you want it to obviously work and do what you need it to, but you also want to make sure its gentle enough that it wont damage your hair or ruin what your stylist has done and affecting how your hair looks in the future. For this reason I recommend only using toning masks. Toning masks are typically semi permanent so it is the least damaging, and the least permanent.

Some toning masks stay in the cuticle of the hair longer and might take more washes to completely remove.

Toning Masks I Recommend For My Clients

I love recommending the Lumigloss series for at home toning because of how gentle it is on the hair, how it makes the hair feel after using it, how beautiful the tones are, and how it doesn’t create any color correction scenarios for my clients. If you are needing a more drastical tone change, I recommend going into the salon for a glossing service.

Make it stand out

With panthenol and hydrolyzed proteins, LumiGloss offers intense hydration, balances porosity & heals the hair to prevent future breakage.

SHOP LUMIGLOSS SERIES

For Brunettes (no Highlights) - I recommend using Espresso to add richness, because brunettes can start to feel dull over time.

For Golden Blondes or Brunettes with Warm Highlights - I recommend Honey. It is going to add just enough warm to make your color vibrant again.

For Neutral Blondes - I recommend Champagne. It is a balance between warm and cool giving you a beige tone. Its so pretty and honestly anyone, blonde or not, seriously cant go wrong with using it!

For Icy Blondes - I recommend smoke. If your blonde is feeling brassy Smoke is perfect for making your hair icy again without over toning it or making it feel dark or dull.

For Brunettes with Cool Highlights - You could definitely use Smoke and that would help make your highlights less brassy, but if you feel like they might need something just a tiny bit stronger, like if they are looking more orange than yellow, you will want to use Frost.

For Coppers & Reds - There are two options: Fire & Brick. Fire is going to be more copper (orange) and Brick is going to be more Red. These two are the most vibrant of all of them because reds and coppers tend to fade the most and the quickest. I always recommend if you are using one of these two, to start off with mixing it with some regular conditioner to dilute it and then adjust if needed.

Not sure if you need a tone change but just feeling dull? There is a Clear Lumigloss that will just add all the conditioning benefits to your hair and give it shine without affecting the tone at all!

PRO TIP: You can mix any of the lumigloss series together with each other to create a custom tone. Some favorites mixed together are Espresso & Brick, Honey & Fire, Champagne & Smoke
